Georgia Southwestern University is getting a special visitor February 27th to discuss earthquake and tsunami hazards according to a release from the university.

Southern Methodist University Professor Heather DeShon will give two lectures free and open to the public that Wednesday.

The first lecture, “Great Earthquakes and New Insights into Subduction Seismogenesis”, will be in Jackson Performance Hall at 11 a.m. This lecture will be for a general audience and is free and open to the public. 

A technical lecture, “Using Seismic Tomography to Image Subduction Systems: Applications to Costa Rica-Nicaragua and Sumatra”, will be in Roney 301 at 3:30 p.m.

DeShon’s research focuses on understanding earthquake initiation and rupture complexity within subduction systems, such as those responsible for major earthquakes and tsunamis including the Sumatra-Andaman Islands earthquake and tsunami of Dec. 2004, and the more recent offshore Japanese earthquake and tsunami of March 2011.
