ALBANY, GA -- If you or your child is in college the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) wants you to be on the lookout for a new
tax scam
targeting students.
On college campuses across Georgia, including here in Albany, so called financial experts claim to be able to get a student additional tax refunds.
Once the student hands over their personal information, the scam artist uses it to file a fraudulent tax return.
"We encourage all individuals to just be mindful, be protective of your identity, and make sure you don't have to give it out unless it's absolutely positively necessary," said Mark Green, an IRS Media Relation Specialist.
If you feel you were a victim of tax fraud notify the police as well as the IRS.
