ALBANY, GA --
Albany police have confirmed that a five-year-old female has been the victim of a pit bull attack.

The incident occurred in the 400 block of Station Crossing Drive, where a group of children were playing.

The dog reportedly got out of a nearby fenced in area, and started running towards the group. The children then fled, however the victim fell and was attacked by the 90-pound dog.

Officials report that 5-year-old Janiya Solomon suffered a 7-inch gash to her forehead, and has been transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

Albany police reported Thursday morning that Solomon was in intensive care due to the injury she sustained.

Maurice Blakely, who lives next door to the Solomon family said his daughter and son play outside with the little girl all the time and nothing like this has ever happened.

Blakely said he was watching them play up the street when all of a sudden they started running. Blakely stood up when he saw the kids running and realized the little girl had fallen and the dog started to attack her.

He says he immediately took off running up the street, shooed the dog away so he could grab the girl, and ran her back down the street to her parents.

Blakely said he has never seen this dog around the neighborhood before but believes the dog needs to be taken away due to it’s obvious violent nature.

21-year-old Worth County resident Cory Smith owns the dog, has been charged with animal at large and not having a rabies tag for his dog.
