ALBANY, GA. --
After 31 years working for the city, the general manager for Albany Water, Gas and Light is stepping down.

Lemuel Edwards has announced his retirement in February.

This comes after the Albany City Commission voted against using money from the city's budget to fund the initial phase of a hazardous waste cleanup.

The Environmental Protection Agency ordered the cleanup of the gas plant located on front street.

City officials voted against funding the project due to a lack of funds.

In a statement obtained by our media partner, The Albany Herald, Lemuel Edwards stated, “City leaders have decided they want to be in charge of Water, Gas, and Light and it just doesn't make sense to keep fighting them."

Edwards last day on the job will be February 15th.
