ALBANY, GA --
The Dougherty County Board of Commissioners met Monday to discuss several items including the future of Interim Dougherty County Police Chief, Cynthia Battle.

Discussion was held on whether Chief Battle's 6-month interim stint was necessary. District 2 commissioner, John Hayes, stated that he feels Battle is ready for the job now and the 6-month interim period is unnecessary.

On the other side of the room, Commissioners, Gloria Gains and Jack Stone argued that this gives the commission time to see how Battle adjusts to the new position, and gives the Chief time to acclimate to the increased amount of duties.

"If everything is going fine at that time, we'll promote her to chief, instead of interim chief. If not, we'll wait another 6-months and do it again," said Commissioner Stone.

After discussing the issue, commissioners agreed that the 6-month interim period should remain in effect, simultaneously choosing to keep the Dougherty County Police Department, and Sheriff's Department as separate entities.

Also discussed during the meeting was the shared cost agreement between the county and Southern Ag. Carriers. The company is looking to expand their facility with the hope of staying in Albany and increasing job growth. The county voted unanimously to enter into that agreement with Southern Ag. and is excited for what these new jobs will mean for the community.

New rules and regulations for Riverfront Park were also passed, which will set a nightly curfew for the park, allowing officers to patrol the area and enforce these new rules.
