ALBANY, GA -- The Albany Salvation Army says they need more volunteers on their bench in case of emergency disasters.

On Thursday, the Albany Salvation Army held two four-hour training courses to certify volunteers for the Emergency Disaster team. The course teaches volunteers how the organization fits in with FEMA, GEMA and the Red Cross. It also provides volunteers with the credentials that are now necessary to work in a disaster area.

The organization says they need 24 volunteers in Albany to allow their teams to rotate during work at disaster areas.

“You work 12 to 14 hours a day, you don't get much rest, you're operating under a stressful situation, you're out of your comfort zone, you don't know where you're going to be working, what you're going to be doing necessarily,” Maj. Jim Smith from the state Salvation Army.

A total of 27 people attended Thursday’s training; another session will be in January.

The Emergency Disaster crew in Albany deployed over the summer to the coastal states during the spring storms.
