Yesterday President Barack Obama declared over a dozen counties in Georgia disaster areas and Dougherty County is one of them.

Individuals, families, and certain private non-profit organizations are eligible to apply for disaster assistance. Emergency Management authorities say the application process is crucial and urge residence to start as soon as possible.

"They should always have any kind of receipts for any expenditures that they've had related to the disaster and when they talk to an individual once they have registered they'll be able to find out in detail whether those are eligible for reimbursement," said Terry Ingram, External Affairs Officer for F.E.M.A.

Plans to get a F.E.M.A. official on site in Dougherty County are in the works as well. To apply for assistance visit http://www.DisasterAssistance.gov or call 1-800-621-3362 or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired.
