Residents on Teche Avenue say they don’t mind having a water pump on there street, it’s the dead fish that are causing the problem.  A city pump is opened on Teche draining flood waters from surrounding areas but eels are being transported in the water.  Dozens of eels are dead in the streets and homeowners say the smell is overwhelming.

“The cats get them, eat them and take them up in the yards. A child can pick that up you don't know what kind of germs it may be carrying, anything! Get somebody out here every day or periodically to clean it up,” said Jacqueline Jefferson, who lives in the neighborhood with her family.

Some of the eels in front of Jefferson’s home stretch a foot long and measure more than two inches in diameter. Neighbors say they're worried about the children playing in the area.

Jefferson says she’s called the city twice about the dead eels and the stray animals that are feeding on them.
