ALBANY, GA -- For the Westover Patriots, a clouded region race becomes a whole lot clearer this week in Americus.
Both the Patriots and Americus-Sumter Panthers enter this contest with one region loss and four games left to play. The loser on Friday night is essentially loses control on their postseason destiny.
Currently, the two teams are tied with Monroe for the second spot. The Patriots hold the tiebreak over the Tornadoes after a 17-14 win earlier in the season. While the Panthers lost at home to Monroe last week, 27-13.
The goal of a region title is still intact for the Patriots, but Patriots Head Coach Octavia Jones has been deliberate in setting goals for his team. The first goal is to host a playoff game for the first time in Westover history.
“We definitely want to have the opportunity to etch our names in the history book and be the first team in Westover football history to host a playoff game,” Coach Jones said.
“I told the guys there's no feeling like playing in the first round at home...having the opportunity to see your logo in the middle of the field...just to get them motivated and understand the important of what we have to do (Friday) night”
Coach Jones says his team gave the game away last season in a 14-12 loss to the Panthers. The key for a win Friday will be slowing down Panthers top running back, Wesley Fields.
