CAMILLA, GA -- A state champion was going to be crowned in Camilla on Friday night. The Westwood Wildcats were only hoping it would be their name on the GISA-A trophy for the second straight season.
The Wildcats defeated Memorial Day 33-21 on Friday night at Centennial Stadium. The win finalized a title repeat and a perfect 26-0 record for Westwood in the last two seasons.
Westwood was familiar with their opponent. The Wildcats and Matadors faced each other for the 2010 state title with Westwood winning in Savannah 31-12. Friday’s game was a little bit closer, but the end result was the same.
The Wildcats hit the board first on their second possession of the game. Sophomore running back J.T. Edore scored on short run after the drive was extended by a gutsy fake punt executed to perfection by Westwood’s Caleb Morrell.
Edore put the Wildcats up 14-0 at the half with another short-distance touchdown run. However, Memorial Day fought back in the second half tying the game at 21 in the fourth quarter. But Westwood responded like a true champion scoring two more touchdowns in the fourth for the victory.
