CHICAGO, IL -- A change of scenery worked for the Albany State Golden Rams.
The Golden Rams used a heavy dose of running back Nathan Hoyte for a 17-14 win over Kentucky State in the Chicago Football Classic. Hoyte was named the game’s offensive MVP carrying the ball 28 times for 95 yards and a touchdown.
Hoyte put ASU on the scoreboard first with an eight yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Golden Rams kicker Dillan Fontaine added a 37 yard field goal early in the third quarter.
After a Thorobred touchdown, ASU quarterback David Kooi connected with receiver Ronnie Tubbs on an 18 yard touchdown score for a 17-7 lead in the fourth quarter.
Keenan Grissett and Kooi alternated offensive series at the quarterback position. Grissett started the game, but didn't complete a pass in six attempts with an interception. Kooi completed six of nine passes for 59 yards scoring the game's lone passing touchdown.
After losing three straight games, Albany State earned its first SIAC victory of the season moving to 2-3 for the 2012 season. The Golden Rams will be looking for revenge next week in Macon against Lane College. ASU lost at Lane 26-24 last season.
