ALBANY, GA -- In Michelle Mitchell’s freshman season, the postseason awards came as quickly as one of her trademark drives through the lane.

Netting top scorer and top rebounder for the Darton College basketball team, the freshman was a shoe in for All-Conference honors and an Honorable Mention NJCAA All-American.

The awards continue to roll in for this Cavalier.

This weekend, Mitchell has been invited to play in the 2012 NJCAA Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-Star game- meaning plenty of NCAA coaches will be in attendance.

“It'll open up a lot of doors for coaches to see what I'm capable of doing at a higher level,” Mitchell said.

“This event, this weekend will put her on the map. People are aware of her, college coaches are aware of her, but a lot of people haven't seen her play,” Darton basketball coach Lea Henry said.

The three-day event at Northwest Florida State College isn't just any all-star exhibition. It's an exclusive star-studded affair by invite only. Mitchell was invited as one of the top 40 NJCAA sophomores in the nation.

“I told Coach Henry that I didn't expect to get as many honors as I did this year and it's amazing,” Mitchell said.

For Coach Henry, all Mitchell's success isn’t much of a surprise.

“She's one of the best athletes I've had the opportunity to coach in 27 years. She's exceptionally quick, fast and left-handed, but she also loves the game and she's been willing, since last season, to work on her game and make some things better,” Coach Henry said.

Mitchell, who always thinks defense first, is staying grounded and focused on this weekend’s games- that's just the kind of player she is. But Coach Henry says there will be plenty of Division 1 coaching eyes focused on her sophomore guard.

“They're going to want her on their team because she can do things that not everybody can do. When you can get the ball from one end of the floor and outrun everybody...that's pretty phenomenal,” Henry said.

“(The weekend) could mean a lot or it could mean nothing...it just depends on how I go play. Hopefully, I'll do good and I'll get more calls and...I'll just go from there,” Mitchell said.
