AMERICUS, GA -- Leonard Pope has returned home to Americus for his Annual Kids Day. The NFL tight end continued on his tradition of helping the hometown community this morning- something the six year veteran has done every summer since becoming a professional.
This year, Pope brought some new colors and a terrible towel to the party at Americus’ Boone Park. It’s all black and yellow for Pope who signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in April.
Pope has done a lot for his local community in the past. The former Georgia Bulldog organized and donated a tremendous amount of time and money when a 2007 tornado tore through his hometown. Pope also created his CHAMP (Creating Hope and Making Progress) charity to benefit less-privileged children.
Helping Americus was the number one priority for Pope on Saturday, but he also spent some time talking about his career and his new team.
“It was a job opportunity. I just wanted to seize that for one and just try to maximize my opportunity that the Steelers are giving me right now. It's a great opportunity for me to just go out and do my best,” Pope said underneath the shade of a Steelers “terrible towel” and a Pittsburgh emblazoned Panama hat.
The Steelers completed mandatory mini camps this past Thursday. Pope says he's using these next few weeks to relax before the dust gets kicked up in Pittsburgh.
