ALBANY, GA -- A local holiday hoops tournament, The U-Save It Classic, will not be saving any money for its participating schools.

The Georgia High School Association has fined the eight boys teams that played in the December tournament for participating in an unsanctioned GHSA event. The penalty was handed down to the schools Tuesday.

According to the GHSA, the tournament host must request sanctioning. However, each school must also make sure the tournament has been approved by the high school governing body.

The U-Save It Classic which ended Dec. 20 included all four Dougherty County High Schools, Mitchell County and Terrell County.

Dougherty County School System Assistant Superintendent Kenneth Goseer says the mistake was an oversight by the system.

Goseer added that they are in negotiations to reimburse the four Dougherty County high schools for the fine. Any sort of reimbursement would come from the tournament proceeds.

The GHSA stated that all wins and losses from the classic will still count toward the team's overall record.
