ALBANY, GA -- The American Legion state baseball tournament shines on the city of Albany this weekend with two local teams trying to bring a legion title back to South Georgia for the first time in three years.
Neither Post 30 of Albany nor Post 182 of Leesburg will have to travel far for the games. Darton's cavalier field will be the host site for the three day, six-team state tourney beginning on Friday. The tournament winner advances to the Southeastern Regional in South Carolina.
Post 182 is the most recent South Georgia team to hold the championship in 2008, but this Leesburg team has struggled to stay on the field due to weather in the past two weeks. However, the forecast is clear and the squad believes the familiar site will help.
“It's just that home field advantage of course. I mean…you're used to the field...you've played on it all year. It's just that advantage you got,” 182 infielder Ryan Hickox said.
The home-cooking is also good for future Darton Cavaliers expected to play for the junior college next season.
“Kids being able to play here and some of them are going to school here this next year…so it gives them the chance to play in this venue and this is an outstanding place to play,” Post 182 head coach Larry Cook said.
