LEESBURG, GA -- It’s been a week of great success and disappointment for the Lee County Wrestling team.
On Saturday, the Trojans qualified, a program record, seven wrestlers for the GHSA State meet. On Tuesday, the wrestling world was told their sport didn’t have a place in the Olympics.
"Wrestling to me in the Olympics is like taking one of the founding fathers off of Mount Rushmore. It makes no sense to me,” Lee County coach Tom Matheny said.
“You want to go to college and wrestle. You want to go to the Olympics and wrestle…that’s your dream. When you hear that, it’s not good,” 132 lb Trojan Alex Davis said
The IOC voted to toss wrestling off the mat for the 2020 Summer Olympics. A decision that won't affect the seven Trojans heading to state, but may hurt the high school wrestling program in the future.
“You would eventually see the dominos hit at the high school level as that dream of an Olympian is removed. Hopefully it won't be (though),” Matheny said.
There's still a chance wrestling could remain on the Olympic slate, but it will be decided by politics of the sports’ governing bodies, FILA.
As for Lee County, tthey'll keep fighting like they always do. With a program record amount of state qualifiers, they're bringing a lot of heart to Macon this weekend.
"We may not be the most technical team in the whole state, but we're going to keep coming forward and forward and put the pressure on,” Davis said.
“These kids are high character…a lot of integrity in these kids. I think that defines a wrestler,” Coach Matheny said.
