ALBANY, GA -- On July 2nd, 2011, the Albany Panthers broke through for their first indoor football league championship. Hoisting the trophy, the champagne showers- those images still embedded deep in to the minds of the Panthers players returning for another title in 2012.
On Saturday night, all of those images were put on repeat just as the Panthers had planned. The champagne was fresh, the confetti (black and purple) fell from the rafters and the Albany Panthers won the PIFL Championship.
Albany outmatched the Richmond Raiders 60-50 for their second title in as many years. Wide receiver (and overall team specialist) Antwontis Cutts was named Most Valuable Player catching the first touchdown pass of the game, returning a kickoff for a score late in the second and recovering a fumble after the break.
Darnell Kennedy started at quarterback before giving way to three-year anchor Cecil Lester in the fourth quarter. Lester, who hadn’t played in three games, brought the PIFL trophy home for Albany.
"It was the perfect ending,” Panthers Head Coach Lucious Davis said.
Starting quarterback Darnell Kennedy threw four touchdowns and one interception in the first half for a 36-30 lead at the break.
