ALBANY, GA -- Darton State softball assistant coach Gene Dews has left the team due to health reasons.

Dews, the father of Cavaliers head coach David Dews, joined the team at the beginning of the 2013 season.

According to the Cavaliers head coach, the grind of competition and coaching pressure provoked previous heart problems for the Cavs assistant coach.

Dews was involved in a scuffle/argument with the Chipola coaching staff during Thursday’s game at the Cavalier softball field. The event resulted in the Chipola team leaving after game one of a scheduled doubleheader.

However, Dews’ decision to leave the team was based strictly off health concerns rather than a disciplinary reaction.

The elder Dews was not on the bench for the Lady Cavaliers sweep of Middle Georgia Saturday. Darton State is 26-10, 5-1 in the conference. The team returns to conference play Tuesday at South Georgia College.
