ALBANY, GA -- The Monroe football team deserved a day to enjoy their non-region win over state-ranked power Fitzgerald. But, according to Tornado head coach Charles Truitt, that's all the time they're going to get.

On Saturday night, Monroe stopped the Purple Hurricanes inches short on fourth down to end a wild overtime night at Hugh Mills Stadium. An emotional win for the Tornadoes, but now it's time to focus on the region schedule.

The “Good Life City” rivalry kicks off again with Westover and Monroe next Saturday. In 2011, Monroe knocked Westover out of playoff contention in the regular season finale with a 27-10 regular season win. To add insult to injury, the Tornadoes also hold the overall series advantage with the Patriots 25-16-1

The players rested on Sunday, but Coach Truitt was back to business.

“To be able to compete at that particular level and play good like we did (against Fitzgerald) was good, but we're only going to enjoy this moment for a little while because we get ready for the region (Sunday) afternoon,” Truitt said.

Both teams have faced stiff competition in their non-region games. Westover defeated Tift County in their opener before dropping its next games to state-ranked Jonesboro and Lee County.

Monroe opened the year with a last second loss to Brooks County before rebounding against Wilcox County and Fitzgerald.
