ALBANY, GA -- For Deerfield-Windsor, there are no real surprises entering this weekend's GISA baseball semifinals. As the baseball begins to heat up in May, the Knights know there's usually only one team in front of them.
Once again, the Knights are ready for a high intensity playoff series against Tattnall Square. It’s the second year in a row the two teams are meeting in the semifinal round in Macon.
The Knights defeated Tattnall in the semifinal finale 5-4 in 2011 on a bases loaded, walk off single by outfielder Sam Shellhaus. The three-game series victory for Deerfield snapped a long playoff losing streak to the Trojans.
Shellhaus is bracing for some extra motivation this season from the Trojans.
“I know that second baseman is still there that made that error…I like to say. He’s going to remember that…pitchers, everyone…there’s always going to be that tension between Deerfield and Tattnall…and that’s going to come out to play Saturday and Friday,” Shellhaus said.
“Tattnall brings a lot of fans and they’ll definitely be loud. We just got to focus on the game, and not let their crowd take us out of it,” Catcher Gil Gillespie said.
Deerfield holds a 14-game winning streak entering this match-up in Macon. The 2012 season series between the two teams is tied at one with Deerfield winning the most recent game 5-4.
The winner will host the GISA-AAA State Championship series on May 25-26.
