DECATUR, GA -- It was a different day on the diamond, but the Darton College baseball team hit the same result against East Georgia.
Darton’s pattern of hot hitting against East Georgia continued in Decatur on Friday. The Cavalier bats powered through the Bobcats 10-2 in the opening round of the NJCAA Region 17 tournament. Darton advances to the semifinals against Georgia Perimeter Saturday at 3:30 PM.
Darton has outscored East Georgia 46-14 in five meetings this season. Leading 6-2 in the eighth inning, Darton took advantage of an error to run-rule the Bobcats.
To open the eighth, Casey James lined one to the outfield that bounced off the left fielder’s shoulder pushing James to third base. Russell Melton followed with an RBI single. Cody Wofford drove in two runs with a double, and Ryan Lemonds singled in Wofford to seal the game for the Cavaliers.
Starting pitcher A.J. Sunstrom continued to stay hot on the mound pitching all eight innings allowing two unearned runs. The freshman struck out five for his eighth win of the season.
Looking ahead to the semifinal round, Darton and Georgia Perimeter know each other well.
The Cavaliers and Jaguars wrapped up the regular season against each other last weekend. Perimeter took 3 of the 4 games with two of those wins coming at Cavalier Field. Lee County-native Matt Aldrich gets the start for the Cavaliers.
