ALBANY, GA -- It’s been more than a rebuilding year for the Deerfield-Windsor baseball team. The GISA State Playoffs are in full swing, and the Knights are in their normal month of May spot- poised for another run at a state title.
Pitching and defense have led the way as Deerfield hosts Pinewood Christian Friday in the Elite Eight round of the GISA Playoffs. After a sweep of Arlington Christian in the opening round of the playoffs, Deerfield hasn’t lost a game since the middle of March and holds an overall record of 21-3.
“There's a quote that says offense will win you games, but defense will win you championships. That's what's going to have to happen- we're going to have to have a good defense. We don't have good enough pitchers where we're just going to walk out there and strike everybody out,” Pitcher Weston King said.
No one understands the Deerfield defense better than the Knights starting pitchers. Juniors Austin Murphy and King hold their own on the hill, but maintain that it’s easy to look good with the gloves working behind them.
“It's hard to get hits if you're the other team with our defense out there. We just go out there and throw strikes, try not to walk anybody and let our defense do the rest,” Murphy said.
Knights ace Murphy opens the series on the mound against Pinewood Christian starting Friday at 4:30 PM.
