COLUMBUS, GA -- The Columbus Lions and kicker Trey Crum have ruined another Albany Panthers undefeated run.
Each of the past two seasons, the Panthers have opened their season with a 6-0 record. Thanks to Columbus, the Panthers have never reached 7-0.
Lions placekicker Crum nailed a 54-yard field goal as time expired to defeat the Panthers 58-56 on Sunday. Albany came back from 14 points down rallying for a one-point lead with 18 seconds remaining, but the leg of Crum pushed the game back in favor of Columbus.
It appeared the golden leg of Panthers kicker Geoff Boyer would save the day for Albany. Boyer scored an uno on the final kickoff giving the Panthers a one-point lead. Columbus was unable to move down the field in the final seconds, but Crum got just enough on the kick for the victory
Playing in place of injured Panthers quarterback Cecil Lester, Darnell Kennedy threw touchdowns to Antwone Savage and Antwontis Cutts to tie the game at 55 in the fourth quarter.
The Panthers are 3-3 against Columbus in the past two seasons. Columbus ended Albany’s 2011 undefeated season with a 60-56 win at the Albany Civic Center on May 14. The Panthers (6-1) hosts Louisiana next Saturday at 7:30 PM
