ALBANY, GA -- It's time to turn on the lights for the high school track season as region championships begin next week.

On Friday night, the Westover Relays served as a final regular season tune-up for 17 track teams. The Monroe girls and Westover boys continued to click along claiming the top spots in the team standings.

Monroe's do-it-all senior Mimi Land doesn't appear to need a tune-up. Land, who already owns eight assorted state titles in the high jump, triple jump and long jump, broke her own Westover Relay records for the triple jump at 37.5 and a high jump of 5’7.  

“I have to get better. My phases are getting better with practice, but as far as my third phase I need to extend more. I need to get that together before region. Leaving it at that, just winning is fine...for right now,” said Land after her lone triple jump attempt.

Land, along with Tornado teammates Chakerah Fletcher, Akeema Miller and Nardesia McKinney, also earned first in the 4x400m relay.

Westover's Ericka Taylor ran through the distance competitions winning the 3200m and 1600m. However, Taylor stayed humble heading in to the region tournament.

“I know I can do better, so if I just keep practicing I can eventually get to a point where I could run 11.20...that's what I'm hoping for this season,” Taylor said. Taylor’s Patriots team finished fourth in the overall standings.

Monroe’s Alexandria Childs earned first in the discus throw. While fellow-Tornado Destinee Collins snagged first in the 800m run. The Tornadoes won seven out of the day’s 15 events.

On the boys’ side, Westover beat out Tift County for first with 96.5 points. Once again, the Patriots stomped through the field events.

Dontrevious Ousley finished first in discus, and Martin McKenny threw out the competition in the shot put. Patriots Dolphurs Hayes and Alex Donnan finished first and second respectively in the pole vault.

Many of Friday’s teams will be returning to Albany’s Hugh Mills Stadium next week. The AAAA and AAA- Region 1 prelims begin Tuesday.
