ALBANY, GA -- It's 26 years and counting for LPGA pro and former Albany-resident Nancy Lopez. Every year, her annual Albany golf tournament continues to grow which is exactly Lopez’s goal.
The three-time LPGA major winner was once again pleased with Friday’s turnout for her Lopez Hospice Golf Classic held at Doublegate Country Club. Tournament proceeds benefitted Phoebe’s Wilson Hospice House.
On the course, Lopez volunteered her golf game hitting shots at the 11th hole. As for competitive golf, Lopez still participates in a few of the LPGA’s Legend Tour, and is a Golf Channel commentator for LPGA events.
An ambassador for the game Lopez says the future for women's golf looks bright in the US and beyond.
“We have a great tour right now and we've got some great young players and great US players coming up...it's in good hands, good strong tour lots of competition,” Lopez said.
As for players participating in Friday’s tournament, there were some big winners. Albany-native Sissy Smith went home with bragging rights and a car.
Smith hit a hole-in-one off the second tee to earn herself a new Toyota Prius. The long time golfer used a hybrid club to win a hybrid car. Smith used a 26 degree hybrid wedge to drop the shot in from 141 yards out.
