ALBANY, GA -- The Darton College Cavaliers finished 12 under par today to lead the first round of the Annual Ron Marshall Spring Fling at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course in Scottsboro, Ala.

The No. 4-ranked Cavs, with 276 strokes for the day, are four strokes ahead of No. 1-ranked Meridian Community College who finished the day with a total score of 8-under par. The two teams are paired together today and Friday, so head Darton golf coach Bill Jones’ boys are getting a good look at the NJCAA’s top team, he said.

“This being a very big tournament, and with this being the first time we’ve seen Meridian this spring semester, they were ready for them,” Jones said of his Cavs. “And they don’t like where they’re ranked right now, and they want to do something about it.”

Which they certainly did. Joe Sakulpolphaisan, currently ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA, held the lowest score for the Cavs, shooting 68. Shad Tuten was 2-under, and Robert Robertson and Austin McNeal both shot 3-under par.

Although Chase Jones played as No. 3 for Darton today and shot an even par, his score was thrown from the team’s average.

“That’s incredible,” (Bill) Jones said. “That’s probably the first time we’ve ever thrown out an even par.”

The Cavs’ total of 276 strokes today is tied for Darton’s lowest round since the program began over a decade ago.

The Cavaliers will resume play tomorrow at 12:50 p.m. CST. The tournament finishes Saturday.
