ALBANY, GA -- Round one goes to the Westover Patriots.

The first of (likely) multiple meetings between the Westover and Monroe boy’s basketball teams ended in an 11-point victory for the Patriots and head coach Dallis Smith. With the 61-50 Westover win, the Patriots move on to the U-Save It Pharmacy Classic Championship Tuesday.

The Patriots’ opponent for the championship? The cross-town rival Albany Indians.

The Indians, led by forward Larry Sanford, fought off Dougherty 59-40 at Albany High School. Dougherty held a lead in the second quarter, but like the other regular season meetings between the two teams- Albany was just too much.

Albany was playing in their third game in four days. Though, Indians Head Coach Archie Chatmon doesn’t believe fatigue has set in for his boys just yet. Fatigue was nowhere to be seen during their semifinal win. On Monday night, Chatmon’s players proved why they’ll be a team to be reckoned within the region and beyond.

“No great plays called, no great shooting, it was just all heart and “I want”…and it was good to see that,” Chatmon said. “That's a beautiful thing. I couldn't help them....Dougherty was doing a great job, I had no help for them, but they just stuck with it.”

There will be no secrets when Albany and Westover play for the Championship on Tuesday. This will be the third meeting between the two teams, and second in the last week and a half. Albany claimed the first two games by 9 and 10 points. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM at the Albany Civic Center.

Dougherty and Monroe square off in the third place game at 5:30 PM.
