MACON, GA -- The last time Deerfield Windsor reached the GISA state baseball finals was 2008. The Knights lost that series to Tattnall Square, and the following two years Deerfield saw its playoff fate end in a similar fashion- with loses to Tattnall.

So it was fitting that a berth in the 2011 finals rested on beating the Trojans one more time.

Deerfield Windsor reserved its spot in the GISA 3A State finals beating Tattnall Square 5-4 in walk-off fashion on Saturday in Macon. Sophomore Sam Shellhaus delivered two tiebreaking hits in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings for the Knights victory.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Deerfield sophomore Sam Shellhaus delivered a hard-hit double into the right-center gap for a 3-2 Knights lead with only three outs remaining for the Trojans.

Knights coach Rod Murray decided to leave starting pitcher Rhett Cooper in the game for the seventh, and Cooper couldn’t close the door on the Trojans.

Cooper struggled with control allowing the game-tying and leading run in the top of the seventh, but the Knights weren’t done.

Deerfield kept its composure in the bottom of the seventh. DWS loaded the bases with no outs tying the game on a fielder's choice at four.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Shellhaus punched a grounder towards second base that the Trojans shortstop couldn’t handle. All Knights were safe on the bases, and the winning run crossed home plate for the 5-4 win.
