ALBANY, GA -- Deerfield-Windsor baseball is back in the GISA final four for the first time since 2008. While the opponent for the Knights is nothing new…heading out on the road to face them. Well, that’s a unique challenge.
For the first time in four years, Deerfield will play an away game in the GISA playoffs, and the team travels to Macon on Friday for game one against longtime rival Tattnall Square.
The Tattnall Trojans and Deerfield have plenty of history as the Knights have fallen to the Trojans in the playoffs three straight years. The Trojan dominance over DWS has already extended into the 2011 season as Deerfield lost at Tattnall in April 6-0.
“You can’t really call it much of a rivalry, right now,” shortstop Banks Kinslow said.
Both teams have played the minimum of four games in the 2011 postseason, but have earned their wins in contrasting ways. Deerfield is averaging 12 runs a game in the two playoff series sweeps, and Tattnall has used pitching to arrive in the final four. The Trojans have given up four runs total in the 2011 postseason.
But that hasn’t intimidated senior Chris Moates.
“I just want to crush the ball, and keep them to limited runs so they don’t even want to come out on Saturday,” Moates said. “They are the big rival…that’s who everybody wants to play…that’s who everyone wants a piece of.”
“I’ll say it’s personal between us and Tattnall. They’ve beated me out all three years of high school, and so I want to put them out right now,” third baseman Matt Moree said.
