ST. GEORGE, UTAH -- Darton College (47-9) entered Thursday’s NJCAA Softball World Series with high expectations for a #13 seed. Of course, a pitching staff that tallied a 0.84 ERA during the regular season always helps with confidence, even when playing the defending National Champions, Miami Dade College.
Darton started out fast in Thursday morning’s match-up scoring the game's first five runs, but it was the dominant pitching that couldn’t hold the lead. The Cavaliers let the game slip away losing to Miami Dade 7-5.
The Sharks racked up seven runs in the final three innings of the game. Starting pitcher Katy Lewis gave up four runs in the first four innings, and Lewis’ replacement Cara Law wasn’t able to stop Miami Dade’s offense, either. Law gave up the game-tying and winning runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
With the loss, the Cavs headed to the consolation bracket to face Butler Community College. However, rainy weather postponed the action in the top of the third with Darton leading 1-0. Play will resume Friday morning at 11 EST.
