JEKYLL ISLAND, GA -- The Darton College golf team brought a slim one stroke lead into the final round of the Region 17 Tournament on Sunday. But when going for a tenth straight region title and playing in a sixth round of golf in seven days...any lead is a good lead.
All the Cavs needed to be was one better than the pack at the end of the day, and the team finished out its seemingly everlasting golf stretch with a five stroke win at Jekyll Island on Sunday.
Darton finished with an overall score of 885 at the Regional. The Coastal Georgia Mariners lurked one back of the Cavs when the day began, but shot a 297 to solidify second place. ABAC finished the tourney in third with a 902.
DC returns to Albany from the six rounds in seven days onslaught with two titles in their pocket, one district and one region. An even better prize for the Cavaliers waited on Monday. A day off.
Darton College coach Dale Dover said this week was a unique experience in his golf coaching career.
“I mean we’ve never done it before, but I know I’m tired. I know that the guys have got to be tired too. Down deep, I know they played hard for me. They wanted to win for the coaching staff, not just for themselves. They wanted to keep that streak alive,” Dover said.
Austin McNeil shot his tournament best, 72, on Sunday. Joe Sakulpolphaisan hit a 72 and Shad Tuten pitched in with a 73 for the final round.
