ALBANY, GA -- In this battle of cats, it was the Albany Panthers that looked like the “kings of the jungle” rather than the Columbus Lions. Three games into the 2011 season, and it all seems to be going right for the Panthers.
Albany got defensive with Columbus in a 46 – 26 victory on Saturday night at the Albany Civic Center. The Panthers are 3-0 in the 2011 season.
Similar to the home-opener two weeks ago, the Panthers defense kept the team afloat while the offense drowned in the first half.
2010 League MVP…turned back-up quarterback…turned starter again, Cecil Lester, struggled with accuracy in the first half. Lester overthrew a wide open Antwontis Cutts for a touchdown in the second quarter. Lester also didn’t receive any assistance. The Panthers receivers dropped balls early in the game.
Aside from a three-play touchdown drive by the Lions early in the first quarter, Columbus mustered three offensive points for the rest of the half on the Albany defense. The other Lion's touchdown came on an impressive kickoff return.
Down 16-12 at the break, the Panthers had them right where they wanted them. Albany outscored Columbus 34-10 in the second half.
The Panthers next game is on April 16th at home against the Alabama Hammers.
