ALBANY, GA -- Halfway through the regular season, and so far, so good for second-year Westover Baseball Coach Kevin Fretwell and his Patriots.
At 9-2 overall, Westover is in contention for a playoff spot in 2011, but these next two days will be a good barometer on their playoff future. The Patriots want the games to be nothing like the weather that Southwest Georgia faced this weekend.
Westover faces teams close to them in the standings with a home game against Crisp on Monday and a match-up in Sylvester with Worth County on Tuesday. Coach Fretwell hopes his squad is up for the challenge.
“Monday and Tuesday’s going to be a huge turning point in the season…whether it’s positive or negative. If we go 0-2 against Crisp and Worth next week…that’s going to put us in a pretty bad hole. The bats have got to be alive,” Fretwell said,
Currently, Westover is third (2-1, 9-2 overall) in 3A-Region 1. Crisp County (2-0, 8-3 overall) leads the region, and Worth County (1-1, 7-6 overall) is fourth.
The Patriots started slow versus Dougherty in their previous game last Thursday, but won comfortably with an 11 run output in the final inning to win 19-8.
Monday’s Westover game is the headliner, but three games will be in action at Paul Eames Park. Albany plays Mitchell County and Dougherty faces Americus. First pitch for all three games is 5:30pm.
