JOHANNESBURG (AP) — New Lions coach Dick Muir has sprung a major surprise by naming teenager Wandile Mjekevu in the starting lineup for his team's Super 14 opener against the Stormers.
Muir included the 19-year-old former South African Schools player on the left wing when he announced his team Thursday for the game at Johannesburg's Coca-Cola Park.
Mjekevu, who only turned 19 in January, will make his Super 14 debut on Saturday despite the fact that he has not played a game in the domestic Currie Cup competition. Muir, the current South African national backline coach, has described Mjekevu as a future Springbok.
Mjekevu is one of 10 players set to make their Super 14 debuts for the Lions, including former New Zealand flyhalf Carlos Spencer.
