SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Former Miami Hurricanes coach Larry Coker has been chosen to coach the new Texas-San Antonio team that plans to play its first season in 2011.

A person with knowledge of the hiring said Thursday that Coker would be introduced at a news conference Friday. The person spoke on condition on anonymity because the hiring hadn't been announced.

The hiring was first reported by the San Antonio Express-News.

Coker went 60-15 with the Hurricanes and led them to the 2001 national championship. He was fired in 2006 after the team went 6-6. The '06 season was marred with problems off the field, including an infamous brawl in the Florida International game that resulted in the suspension of 31 players.
