AMERICUS, GA -- There were lots of hugs and thank you's to go around on Sunday for NFL tight end and Americus-native Leonard Pope.

Just two weeks ago, Pope saved a six-year-old boy from drowning during a pool party in his hometown. On Sunday, the six-year football pro was reunited with BJ Ross and his mother during a ceremony in his honor at the Phoebe Sumter Wellness and Education Center.

Pope received a proclamation from the office of Americus Mayor Barry Blount and a plaque of appreciation from Phoebe Sumter for his heroic efforts.

However, Pope shifted the focus away from his heroism often during the event. The NFL vet said he just hoped the incident raised more attention toward children learning how to swim.
