ALBANY, GA --
The Albany Fire Department is on their way to obtaining new thermal imaging devices.

The department is asking for $115,000 dollars to purchase 14 new devices from Thermo Fisher Scientific; one for each fire station and one for training.

The thermal imagers allow firefighters to see in objects in low light situations, which can be very useful when in search and rescue situations.

"We use them for obviously search and rescue; it also gives the firefighter the ability to see obstacles in their way when they're in those smoke filled environments," said Albany Fire Department Chief James Carswell.

The city commission voted during the Tuesday morning work session to approve the funds for the thermal imagers, but a final decision won’t be made until the next night meeting on January 22nd.
