MOULTRIE, GA -- According to information from the Georgia Department of Insurance, Moultrie Fire Department crews battled a house blaze at 111 1/2 Street SW around 5:08 AM Thursday morning.

Fire department officials say they arrived shortly thereafter and extinguished the fire in the home. The home itself was over 75% damaged and lacked fire alarms.

Reports about the origin of the fire are currently conflicting, but both cite Mary Bryant as being injured in the fire. Officials with Moultrie Fire Department say that the fire originated in the living room while officials with the Georgia Department of Insurance say that Bryant was smoking in her bed and fell asleep.

Fire fighters were able to find Bryant and she was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center, then later airlifted to Joseph Still Burn center in Augusta.

Fire investigator Justin Cox says Bryant was the only person in the home and neighbors had told them that she had a brother that occasionally stayed there. Georgia Insurance Commission officials say that the missing person was found and unharmed.

Cox also wants to remind people make sure they have fire alarms and that they are in working condition.

Earlier in the morning, insurance officials say that two people had been injured and one is missing with early reports from the scene confirming one fatality, but medical officials were able to revive the person, but did not specify who at the time. However, local fire officials say that it was miscommunication.
