ALBANY, GA -- There was no doubting the state title potential of the Monroe and Westover basketball teams on Friday night. This early season meeting between two of the state’s top teams mattered, and Monroe passed the test.

Thanks to Monroe’s Jabari McGhee and a solid defensive effort, the Tornadoes defended their home court with a 70-63 win.

In the first of many expected meeting between the Tornadoes and Patriots, Monroe jumped out to a 10 point halftime lead keeping the dangerous Westover shooters at bay for most of the evening.

Doing most of their damage in the second half, the Westover come back came up short. Kel Miller led the Patriots with 17 points and T.J. Cromer added 14.

'Nadas Take Round One of Rivalry

The Monroe Tornadas checked another benchmark of their list.

The unbeaten Monroe team and Keke Price left little to doubt about the top team in Region 1-AAAA. A low scoring, physical game for three quarters, Price and the ‘Nadas exploded in the final 16 minutes of the game for a 45-32 win.

Price led all scorers with 29 points- nearly outscoring the Lady Patriots by herself.
