ALBANY, GA -- The Darton State College golf team has been playing the waiting game. The Cavaliers are tired of qualifiers, tired of competition amongst teammates, but the Cavaliers are finally swinging at a tournament.
Darton tees off at Coastal Georgia's Fall Invitational Monday under a heavy field of NCAA Division two and NAIA schools. The Cavaliers are returning to the field at St. Simons island for only the second time.
It may be a concern to some as the Cavaliers are comprised mostly of new freshman faces. However, Darton head coach Bill Jones is confident in throwing his freshman to the fire early.
“We're going to be seeing much more mature and much more developed players...that doesn't mean I don't expect to win, but it's going to be a great test for them. They are going to learn all about college golf from day one,” Jones said
“The first day at Sea Island might be a little rough, but I wouldn't be surprised if we shot well either. We've all played competition golf. It's just another day at the golf course,” Freshman Madison Turner said.
After losing several sophomores including NJCAA top golfer, Joe Sakulpolphaisan, four freshmen and one sophomore are slated to start in Darton's first tournament of the year.
