CAMILLA, GA -- Softball has played a major part in the life of Harry Beck Jr.

However, all games stopped when the Camilla man was diagnosed with liver cancer in April. The new goal is a liver transplant, and the Mitchell County community is using Beck’s favorite sport to accomplish the goal.

On Saturday, Beck’s family arranged the Harry Beck Benefit Ball Tournament at the Mitchell-Baker ball fields. Twelve teams batted balls around the diamond joining in the fight to beat Beck's cancer.

Beck’s sister, Becky Griffin, said the games were a good step in the right direction.

"We have twelve teams here today. We're excited and appreciative of all the people who showed up and supported all of us," Griffin said. "Great help, we've had a bunch of people that stepped up to the plate. Donations came in, I mean the whole town has come together."
