MACON, GA -- Deerfield-Windsor baseball remained four wins away from a state title entering game two of the GISA-AAA semifinals. That’s where the Knights will stay as their season ended in Macon on Saturday.
A resilient group of Knights couldn’t come back from Tattnall Square’s starting pitching. Trojan starter Trey Pierce pitched a one-hitter striking out eight Deerfield batters for a 4-0 win.
“Anytime you win 23 times, you lose five games, and you get the region championship back on campus...you got to remind (people)- even though we didn't win a state championship we had a very successful run and a very successful season,” Knights Head Coach Rod Murray said.
For the second day in a row, a big Tattnall third inning spelled doom for the Knights. Tattnall tagged a three-run homerun off Knights starting pitcher Weston King to reach that final of 4-0.
In the sixth, Deerfield threatened with runners on the corners two outs and senior Lindsey Short at the plate.
The senior has come through in so many ways for the Knights this season, but Short was unable to get the ball out of the infield grounding out to third to end the inning.
It was a common Deerfield theme for the day. Every time the Knights had a chance, the Trojans pitching was there to shut it down.
After losing a large core of seniors last season, Deerfield is saying goodbye to a resilient group this year.
We fought…from the beginning of the season to get this far and lose in the semis. Hopefully, we'll leave these juniors, sophomores and freshman to maybe win it next year,” Senior catcher Gil Gillespie said.
“Everything we do together, we had fun…we love each other. There's never a dull moment, there's nothing bad about being with these guys, and I'm going to miss every bit of it,” Knights third baseman Lindsey Short said.
