Sumter Phoebe
From a press release issued by Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital:
ALBANY, GA --
On Tuesday, Americus native Leonard Pope visited Phoebe Sumter Medical Center for fundraising and advocacy.
Pope was on hand to visit patients and employees at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in his hometown. He was born at the local hospital (then known as Sumter Regional Hospital) and has been a supporter of the hospital since he became a professional athlete. He has helped raised more than $32,000 since the hospital was destroyed by a tornado in 2007 and helping keep the hospital's story going as it looked to recover and rebuild. The new hospital was built in Americus and opened on December 16th, 2011, and this will be the first time Pope has been to the new facility since it opened.
In addition to visiting hospital employees and patients, Pope will be on hand to announce his continued partnership with Phoebe Sumter to help promote active lifestyles for children in the community. Obesity among children has become a problem nationwide, and it is even more prevalent in the South. For this reason, Pope wants to promote kids being active and eating healthy and to create awareness about the dangers of childhood obesity, which could lead to a lifetime of health problems. Pope is also a water safety advocate, and gained national acclaim for saving a young child from drowning during the lockout in 2011.
