ALBANY, GA -- It was a perfect Sunday for golf in Southwest Georgia. For Southwest Georgia- native Josh Broadaway, the day could have been completely perfect with a first place finish in the NGA Hooters Tour at Stonebridge Golf Club.
Unfortunately for Broadaway, he had to settle for a fourth place finish after a -6 in the final round of the Michelob Ultra Classic. Miami-native James Vargas started Sunday tied for first, and he ended it alone in first. Vargas shot a Sunday best 65 finishing the tournament -21.
“I knew starting the day at -14, wind wasn’t supposed to blow…it was going to be a shootout. Fortunately, I was able to shoot a good number,” Vargas said.
Vargas stormed to that low number with a Charl Schwartzel at the Masters-style charge on Sunday’s back-nine. Vargas had five birdies in the nine hole span, including three straight on 15, 16 and 17.
The local, Josh Broadaway, had quite a crew with him throughout the final round of the tournament. Broadaway was two shots off the lead until a bogey at 17 derailed any hopes of winning the classic.
His finish still didn’t ruin his experience of playing in front of the hometown fans.
“It kind of got loud out there a couple times when I made some putts. Kyle (Ellis) was like “man, it sounds like an actual golf tournament out there.” It was fun. It was great to have everybody come out. Anytime you get support from the people of Albany…it’s great,” Broadaway said.
