ALBANY -- After back to back State Championships, the Deerfield-Windsor Knights were set for a rebuilding season. Despite having just two seniors and three eight-graders on the roster, the Knights still managed to earn a spot on the podium by finishing third in the AAA State Golf Championship.
Eight-grader Josh Crews led the Knights with a round of 73, good enough for All-State honors. The Knights finished with a total score of 311, sharing the second best score with region-rival and region-champ Southland. Both teams trailed 2009 State Champion Stratford by 11 strokes.
"Stratford put up a great number there, finishing with 300," Deerfield-Windsor head coach Gordy Gruhl said. "With three eight-graders we had a good day," he added.
Southland won the tie-breaker with Deerfield-Windsor to earn second place. Kathryn Fowler, a female golfer, showed the boys the short way around the course, finishing as the co-low medalist with a 69. Fowler was the only golfer to finish both turns under par.
