ALBANY -- The Monroe Tornadoes were not able to claim the Region 1-AAA Boy's Track and Field crown, instead they did one better, winning the school's first ever Boy's State Championship.

Sir Paul Jones led the way for the Tornadoes with wins in the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdles events. Jones just edged out teammate Chris Lovett in the 110 hurdles, winning by 0.04 seconds.

"It's always been he and I competing," Jones said of the close race with his teammate. "It feels so good, we made history," he added.

"It has been an incredible week," Lovett said. The senior signed a scholarship with South Carolina State last Tuesday, less than one day before leaving for the State Meet. "It feels like a dream, I keep waiting to wake up," Lovett added with a laugh.

The Lady Tornadoes will try to duplicate the feat by winning the Girl's State Track and Field Championship. The Girl's Meet begins on Thursday at Hugh Mills. Monroe won the Women's Region 1-AAA title last week.
