ATHENS -- Many teams let the running game open things up for the passing game. The Georgia Bulldogs are not any team, and freshman wide receiver AJ Green is not just any receiver.
The Bulldogs targeted Green early and often in Saturday's SEC victory over Vanderbilt. In fact, the freshman was the star of the show in the first quarter. Green was targeted five times in the Bulldogs first twelve offensive plays. He cashed in early with four receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown. Green finished the day with 7 catches for 132 yards and a score. Still head coach Mark Richt reminded members of the media on Saturday, that Green is just a freshman.
"We were hoping he would make an impact early and he has--really from just about the first game," Richt said following Saturday's win. Quickly he added, "He's still learning."
Look beyond the numbers and you can see that Green has learned a lot already. Along with becoming the first Georgia receiver since 2004 to tally a pair of 100-yard receiving games in a single season, Green is making the tough catches. Of his first four grabs on Saturday, two were highlight-worthy diving grabs, while one was made while toeing the sideline.
"He's still learning, some of his routs aren't the most precise, but his ability to just make the play is better than most," Richt said.
Suffice it to say, Green, who is helping Georgia lead the conference in passing yards, is flat out better than most.
