The town of Tifton celebrated not one but two expansions on Wednesday.

First, the Tift County Chamber of Commerce broke ground with officials at the Tiftarea Academy celebrating the beginning of building a new $3 million expansion project starting with a new gymnasium.

Glenn Willis, the Chairman of the Building Committee at Tiftarea Academy says the new 20,000 square foot gym will seat 1,000 students and construction will begin tomorrow.

Once school ends, construction will begin on the school to add and increase the size of classrooms.

Across town, other members of the Tift County Chamber of Commerce were cutting the ribbon on a new medical equipment center.

The Southern Home Medical Center supplies equipment for patients coming out of medical facilities and has been steadily growing since August.

Owner Mike Connell says he's waited a long time and after working for other companies for over 17 years, he decided to finally open his own.
