ALBANY, GA --
In a press release issued Monday afternoon, the United States Postal Service has announced plans for a public meeting regarding the Downtown post office.
The U.S. Postal Service will hold the public meeting on November 20th at 3 PM in the Kirkland Conference Center at Albany Technical College to discuss its proposal to close the Albany Downtown Station at 345 West Broad Avenue.
Postal officials say they will explain their future plans at the public meeting which will provide an opportunity for the community to comment and seek possible alternatives such as a Contract Postal unit.
Officials with the postal service say that with the deep decline in mail volume due to current economic conditions and continuing electronic diversion, they are exploring ways to reduce expenses including consolidation of retail facilities that are close in proximity.
The lease at the Downtown Station will expire on December 2, but USPS has extended the lease for six months.
