Burned buildings on the way down in Albany

ALBANY, GA -- In our Facebook Story of the Day, you wanted to know if burned buildings are required to be demolished in Dougherty County. Fox 31 spoke with Albany Code Enforcement to see what the policy is.

"We give people who have suffered the loss notification that they have 60 days to make contact, give a plan of rehabilitation or demolition," said Albany’s Chief Code Enforcement Officer, Robert Carter.

If a building owner refuses to cooperate, Code Enforcement has the authority to mandate demolition of the building.

Once a building is checked for asbestos, bids for demolition are taken and the process begins.

Currently, the Shoney's building in East Albany has been seized and ordered for demolition.
